We were in Antarctica in November, early summer, when it was daylight twenty-four hours a day. Although the temperatures were still sub-zero, the sea ice began to melt and cracks appeared. Our journey back to Scott Base involved several crossings of cracks -- many much wider than the one I'm standing over here.
